why it didn't matter
oblivious.
in her own world,
she rejoices.
she connects.
she dabbles in the art of trust,
dips her toes into the world of betrayal.
she walks the lines of worlds,
balances on the tightrope of fantasy and fiction.
she encounters assassins and anarchy.
melodies and monarchies.
she fuses with the heroes,
sympathizes with the villains.
each enemy, each ally
ingrained into her brain.
all pieces of an incomplete puzzle.
she knows.
knows that it matters not how others jeer.
but how each story,
each escapade,
each trial, and each tribulation
completes her.
Myesha Phukan is a 14-year old writer from California. Her work has been featured or is forthcoming in Stanford Anthology for Youth, Teen Ink Magazine, Live It Up Mag, and K’in Literary Magazine. When she’s not writing, you can find her adding to her book collection.
She wrote this piece because as a kid, and even now, she is very interested in books. Reading was her escape from the real world. This poem is a way for her to realize what her childhood was like.
